Diogo Jota: Cristiano Ronaldo Leads Tributes as Football World Grieves

The football world is in mourning following the sudden and tragic death of Diogo Jota, the Portuguese international and Liverpool FC forward, who died in a car crash alongside his brother, André Silva, in Zamora, Spain.

According to Spanish authorities, the accident occurred in the early hours of July 3, 2025, when Jota’s Lamborghini suffered a suspected tyre blowout on the A-52 motorway. The vehicle veered off the road and burst into flames. Both Jota and his brother died at the scene.

Cristiano Ronaldo: “It Doesn’t Make Sense”

Among the first to speak out was Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who led global tributes to his teammate and close friend. In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Ronaldo wrote:

“It doesn’t make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We’ll all miss you.”

The two had recently played side by side for Portugal in the UEFA Nations League just weeks before the accident. Jota had also celebrated his wedding with long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, a joyous occasion now tragically overshadowed.

A Star on and off the Pitch

Diogo Jota, aged 28, had enjoyed a remarkable career. Starting at Paços de Ferreira, he earned moves to Atlético Madrid, Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, before signing with Liverpool in 2020 for £41 million. At Liverpool, he became a fan favorite, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances, and helping secure the 2024–25 Premier League title.

Internationally, Jota was a consistent presence for the Portuguese national team, earning 49 caps and scoring 14 goals. He was instrumental in Portugal’s 2019 and 2025 UEFA Nations League victories.

Football World Reacts

Tributes poured in from across the globe:

  • Liverpool FC described Jota as a “cherished part of the club and a beloved figure whose passion, talent, and spirit inspired so many.”

  • Wolverhampton Wanderers, Porto, and Atlético Madrid all released emotional statements honoring Jota’s legacy.

  • UEFA announced a minute of silence will be observed ahead of all Women’s Euro 2025 matches this week, including Portugal’s match against Spain.

  • Fellow professionals including Pepe, Jamie Carragher, Rúben Neves, and Matt Doherty remembered Jota as “humble,” “hardworking,” and “a joy to be around.”

An Unimaginable Loss

Jota’s sudden death has left a deep void not only in football but in the hearts of fans, friends, and family. Known for his quiet demeanor and relentless work ethic, he was admired for balancing success with humility. He leaves behind his wife, Rute, and their three children.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also issued a national condolence message, saying, “Jota was more than a footballer — he was a national symbol of dedication, resilience, and hope. Portugal mourns a great son.”

A Legacy That Lives On

Though his life was cut short, Diogo Jota’s legacy will endure. Through the goals he scored, the teammates he lifted, and the lives he touched both on and off the pitch, he will be remembered as one of Portugal’s brightest stars — taken too soon, but never forgotten.

May he and his brother rest in peace.

Rest in peace, Diogo Jota (1996–2025) and André Silva.
