Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has issued a strong ultimatum to President William Ruto, demanding the immediate formation of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Speaking at a political rally, Kalonzo warned that if the commission is not constituted by the end of March 2025, he will mobilize nationwide protests to pressure the government into action.
The IEBC has remained non-operational for nearly two years following the resignation and retirement of its commissioners. The delay in appointing new officials has led to concerns over Kenya’s electoral integrity, particularly as the country approaches the next general elections. The commission is also responsible for the delimitation of constituency boundaries, a process that has been overdue, further raising legal and political concerns.
Kalonzo accused the Ruto administration of deliberately stalling the formation of the IEBC to manipulate future elections. “Kenya’s democracy is under threat. We cannot allow a situation where elections are conducted without a legitimate, independent electoral body,” he declared.
Opposition leaders have echoed Kalonzo’s demands, calling for immediate action to ensure electoral fairness. Meanwhile, government officials argue that the delay is due to legal and procedural challenges, assuring the public that steps are being taken to address the issue.
As the deadline approaches, political tensions are expected to rise, with Kenyans closely watching whether the government will act or face mass protests.
