Strong Earthquake Strikes Southern Japan, Prompting Tsunami Advisories

On January 13, 2025, at approximately 9:19 p.m. local time, a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Kyushu region in southern Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the epicenter was located in the Hyuga-Nada Sea, off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, at a depth of about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles).

Tsunami Advisories and Immediate Response

Following the earthquake, the JMA issued tsunami advisories for Miyazaki Prefecture and the neighboring Kochi Prefecture in Shikoku Island, cautioning residents about potential waves up to 1 meter (3.2 feet) high. Residents in some coastal areas were advised to evacuate as a precaution. Shortly after the quake, a small tsunami measuring approximately 20 centimeters (8 inches) was observed at Miyazaki Port. The advisories were lifted later that night, and no significant damage or injuries were reported.

Aftershocks and Ongoing Monitoring

The JMA has warned residents to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks, especially in the next two to three days. The agency also noted a 10-20% chance of a similar magnitude quake occurring in the coming days. Authorities are closely monitoring the Nankai Trough, a geological fault known for significant seismic activity, to assess any changes in earthquake risk.

Infrastructure and Safety Measures

Despite the earthquake’s strength, there were no immediate reports of major structural damage. Key infrastructure, including the Ikata and Sendai Nuclear Power Plants, reported no abnormalities. Japan’s stringent building codes and regular disaster preparedness drills have been credited with minimizing potential damage and ensuring public safety during such events.

Public Advisory

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed through official channels and follow any guidance from local authorities. Preparedness for aftershocks and adherence to safety protocols remain crucial in the aftermath of the earthquake.
