Gabon Suspends Social Media Nationwide Over Security Concerns
The government of Gabon has ordered a nationwide suspension of social media platforms until further notice, citing growing security and public safety concerns. The directive, issued by the country’s media regulator, aims to curb the spread of false information, cyberbullying, and the unauthorised sharing of personal data.
According to officials, the decision was taken after authorities observed a surge in online content that allegedly fuelled tension, misinformation, and division among citizens. The regulator stated that unchecked digital activity had contributed to rising conflict, with viral posts spreading unverified claims that risk destabilising communities.
