Tragic Incident on Nairobi’s Thika Road: Passenger Dies Following Fare Dispute

A tragic event unfolded on Nairobi’s Thika Road, leading to the death of a passenger following a fare dispute with a matatu conductor. The incident has sparked public outrage and raised concerns about passenger safety in Kenya’s public transportation system.  

Incident Details

The victim, identified as Gilbert Thuo Kimani, boarded a Super Metro matatu (registration number KDL 125N) en route to Kahawa Wendani. A disagreement arose when the conductor demanded a fare of KSh 80, while Kimani had only KSh 50. The altercation escalated, resulting in Kimani being ejected from the moving vehicle. Tragically, he fell onto the tarmac and was run over by the same bus, dying instantly.

In response to the incident, Super Metro expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to Kimani’s family. The company emphasized its commitment to passenger safety and announced the suspension of the crew involved, pending further investigation. Super Metro pledged full cooperation with authorities to ensure justice is served and is implementing stricter safety protocols to prevent future tragedies.

The incident has ignited public fury, with many Kenyans questioning the recklessness and inhumanity exhibited by the matatu crew. Commuters have expressed concerns about increasing cases of mistreatment by matatu crews, calling for strict regulation and accountability within the public transport sector.

 

Ongoing Investigations

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The driver was taken into custody, while the conductor fled the scene and is currently being sought by law enforcement. The vehicle involved has been impounded by traffic officers from Kahawa Wendani.
