🚨 DCI Summons Cleophas Malala Over Helicopter Landing Incident

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned Cleophas Malala, Deputy Leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), to appear before investigators in Kakamega no later than Friday, August 8, 2025, to record a statement about a controversial helicopter landing incident.

Incident date: Saturday, August 2, 2025, during halftime of a national secondary school football final between Musingu High School and St. Joseph’s Kitale at Mumias Sports Complex.

A private helicopter carrying Malala landed on the pitch mid‑game, prompting panic among thousands of students, teachers, officials, and fans, according to eyewitnesses.

Police view: Western Region Police Commander Issa Mohamud described the landing as a “reckless, irresponsible and national embarrassment,” emphasizing it wasn’t an emergency but appeared to be political showmanship at the expense of public safety.

Legal violations: The act allegedly breached the Civil Aviation Act, Ministry of Education safety protocols, Basic Education Act, and sections of the Penal Code on public safety and trespass.

Investigation: A joint probe is underway involving the DCI, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), and the Ministry of Education.

If investigators find that Malala and the pilot violated aviation rules or endangered lives, they may face criminal charges including endangering safety, trespass, and violation of aviation regulations. Sanctions under the Civil Aviation Act could include fines or imprisonment.

This is not the first time Malala has been summoned by the authorities. In May 2025, he faced DCI questioning over a political rally in Western Kenya that allegedly led to clashes and the seizure of three of his vehicles.
