Uhuru Kenyatta Rebukes Kenyan Leaders Over Trump’s Aid Cuts, Urges Self-Reliance for Africa

Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged African leaders to view former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent suspension of foreign aid as a catalyst for self-reliance rather than a setback. Speaking at the East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit in Mombasa on January 29, 2025, Kenyatta emphasized the importance of African nations taking charge of their own development and reducing dependence on external assistance.

Trump’s executive order, signed on his inauguration day, initiated a 90-day freeze on foreign aid spending, affecting programs like the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and USAID, which are vital to many African countries. This move prompted concerns among African leaders about the potential negative impacts on health and development initiatives.

In his address, Kenyatta challenged the prevailing sentiment of disappointment:

“I saw some people the other day crying that Trump has withdrawn funding. Why are you crying? It is neither your government nor your country. He has no reason to give you anything. You don’t pay taxes in America. He is appealing to his people.”

He further urged African nations to reassess their priorities and allocate resources to critical sectors such as healthcare:

“Nobody is going to continue holding out a hand to give you. Whether we like it or not, funding for pandemics must come from ourselves. We need to re-prioritize what is important for us as Africans and allocate resources accordingly.”

Kenyatta’s remarks have garnered international attention, with figures like Elon Musk, head of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), expressing support. Musk commented on social media, “Good for him!” in response to Kenyatta’s stance.

This development serves as a pivotal moment for African leaders to reflect on their nations’ reliance on foreign aid and to strategize on building more self-sufficient economies and healthcare systems.

Kenyans for Kenyans: Kenyans Raise over Sh200k for Woman Blasted Over Rent Arrears

In a heartwarming display of community support, Kenyans have rallied together to raise over KSh 200,000 for Milkaa Moraa Tegisi, a mother from Nairobi’s Mukuru kwa Njenga slums who was recently locked out of her home due to rent arrears. This act of generosity comes after a widely publicized incident where Moraa sought assistance from Pastor James Ng’ang’a of Neno Evangelism Centre but was turned away.

Moraa had been locked out of her house for a week over unpaid rent arrears. She anticipated that she would receive help from the church only to be turned away.

Moved by her plight, Sammy Ondimu Ngare, an administrative police officer, initiated a fundraising campaign to assist Moraa. Through his efforts and the contributions of compassionate well-wishers, over KSh 200,000 was raised to help Moraa settle her rent arrears and support her family’s needs.

Additionally, Jarunda Jaluth Mambobiad, a Nairobi-based philanthropist, offered to pay two years’ rent for Moraa and assist her in starting a small business. He expressed his desire to help after learning about the challenges she faced.

Moraa’s story has touched the hearts of many, leading to an outpouring of support from both local and international communities. This collective effort underscores the power of unity and compassion in addressing societal challenges.

For those who wish to contribute further, donations can be sent directly to Moraa via M-Pesa at 0705028977 (Milka Tegisi).

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of empathy and community support in uplifting those in need.
